Unraveling the Privacy Paradox: Users, Online Environment, and the Luxury of Privacy Ralf Dewolf, Assistant Professor, Ghent University & Senior Researcher, imec-mict-UGent Abstract: What truly constitutes a paradox: the privacy behaviors of individuals or the online environment in which they find themselves? Over the years, there has been debate surrounding the apparent disparity between users’ expressed privacy concerns and their actual behaviors, whether through oversharing personal information or underutilizing available privacy controls. In this talk, I examine the capabilities of users, the online environment, and above all, the transformation of privacy into a luxury commodity. During the presentation, I will examine the potential roles that personal data vaults can (or cannot) fulfill. Room: Blauwe Vogel Time: 9h30-10h00Digital platforms are eating the world Tom Evens, Associate Professor, Ghent University Abstract: Digital platforms run the world. They have spread their tentacles over a wide array of business activities and continue to invade the territory of traditional industries. But how should we look at these platforms? What are their business strategies? How does this platformization of industries evolve?  And what does this mean for Europe?
Room: Vos Time: 9h30-10h00
Cookies in the public interest – A case study of a public service media organization’s reasons for user tracking Ine Van Zeeland, PhD Researcher, imec-SMIT-VUB Abstract: Targeted advertising is ubiquitous on media websites, and it requires user tracking. In the past decade, regulation of user tracking by online media has become progressively stricter. At the same time, an increasingly aware public is confronting this practice by avoiding advertising or trackers in various ways. Nevertheless, even public service media (PSM) still widely engage in the use of cookies to track users. This talk addresses the question why European PSM deploy cookies, despite legal and public trust risks.
Room: Blauwe Vogel Time: 10h00-10h20
The Human Side of Media at the Edge Neelima Sailaja, Transitional Assistant Professor, Horizon Digital Economy Hub, Department of Computer Science, University of Nottingham Abstract: This talk will present a narrative on audience centered considerations around a shift to the edge for modern media. The research agenda here starts with an explication of the challenges posed by data leverage in media to both audiences and service providers in the U.K.. This then moves on to responses (like a Living Room of the Future, a Cross Media Recommender and a Caravan) that explored audience feedback towards their near future media consumption scenarios adopting an edge-based approach for the underlying data processes. Plenary Sessions 13h00-14h30Jouw.ID, the single sign-on and personal data vault for the Netherlands Martijn Van Dam, Co-founder, Stichting Nederlandse Datakluis   Abstract: The Dutch Data Vault Foundation is on a mission to change the current data model on the internet: from 3rd and 1st party data to 1st person data. The five largest media companies of the Netherlands decided to work together on R&D on a personal data vault model as an alternative for the existing domination of big tech in media’s value chains. Privacy by design, compliancy by default and personal control over personal data are key words of the new so called decentralized model. Based on the Solid specification, the Dutch Data Vault Foundation is currently developing Jouw.ID. Jouw.ID will be a one stop solution for consumers for login, privacy settings (no more cookie walls!) and personal data profiles. Starting in the media but planning to expand to other sectors as well. Dutch Data Vault will present its mission, strategy, first use case and a sneak preview of Jouw.ID. The Solid4Media journey: from users to use cases Stephanie Van Hove, Researcher, imec-mict-UGent Abstract: Mid-2023, the Solid4Media project takes off to explore and validate the potential of Solid technology within the Flemish media landscape. During its first months, user researchers applied a mixed-method approach to explore questions such as ‘What is the adoption potential of personal data vaults for media services’, ‘What motivates media users to use data vaults?’, and ‘Which Solid use cases are best evaluated by media representatives and users?’. In this presentation, we delve into the results from the first six months of user research within this project. We present the motivations, barriers and features that impact media users’ intention to use data vaults. Moreover, we will take you through the ideation process, which started with over 120 ideas and ultimately consolidated to four use cases. We conclude this presentation with the challenges and next steps to fully capture the potential of data vaults to deliver a more personalized and secure media experience. Room: Blauwe Vogel Time: 14h45-15h15How to create a media ecosystem through data collaboration Quentin Felice, Co-founder and COO, Datavillage   Abstract: Datavillage will present its work in the media industry and how they power an ecosystem of media players in Europe through the concrete implementation of a Confidential Data Collaboration platform.           Room: Vos Time: 14h45-15h15
Balancing interests and user perceptions within Family Pods?   Eva Lievens, Associate Professor of Law & Technology, Ghent University & Michiel Fierens, PhD Researcher, CiTiP, KU Leuven
Abstract: Concept of Family Pods and questions in those contexts? Who manages the data, parents? Do children themselves have a say in this? Collective vs individual interests within Family Pods? How to balance those interests following the GDPR? New kind of harms (information-induced)? Room: Blauwe Vogel Time: 15h15-15h45
Platforms and New Technologies: Solid from a Copyright and Data Law Perspective   Leander Stähler, PhD Researcher, CiTiP, KU Leuven Abstract: Copyright is a key legal vehicle for valorizing media. In the online context, alongside new data legislation, copyright law will impact how new technologies can intervene in concentrated markets. Leander’s contribution addresses some of the copyright concerns that Solid may be able to address. It also reports findings of the XReco project as a snapshot of platforms, copyright and emerging extended reality (XR) technology. Room: Vos Time: 15h15-15h45
Exploring User Perceptions of Data Vaults: Insights from Solid Pod Implementation Tim Theys, PhD Researcher, imec-mict-UGent Abstract: Curious about what users actually think about data vaults? During this presentation, we’ll delve into the findings from our case study where a Solid pod was integrated into the Flemish public broadcaster’s news website. Discover the impact data vaults have on the user experience. Room: Blauwe Vogel Time: 15h45-16h15  Building business applications with Solid – Bridging the gap between theory and practice Michael Schoenmaekers, CTO, Lemon   Room: Vos Time: 15h45-16h15
Proving my age with Solid, a child’s play? Martin Sas, PhD Researcher, CiTiP, KU Leuven Abstract:  In this presentation, Martin will expose privacy risks associated with the implementation of age verification systems in online services. He will also explore the potential of Solid pods as a viable solution for users, including children, to authenticate their age online while safeguarding their privacy. Finally, Martin will highlight challenges that could hinder the widespread adoption of Solid pods in the online landscape, setting the ground for a more in-depth discussion with the audience.
